Established in 2001, the Dot NAME top-level domain extension is the only one intended for personal sites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At first, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you planned to book john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased third-level names remained online.
